Both of us come from athletic backgrounds: one dancer and one pole vaulter. We both know our way around a workout regime and are familiar with various types of diets. However, it is much easier to stay consistent with these types of things when you are a part of a group or team. Growing up and being involved in sports gets you very comfortable with being told what to do. What to do in the gym, what to eat, what your schedule is supposed to look like. It is a much different story when you are an adult and you become solely responsible for your routine. Not only is it very different, but it is a lot more difficult too. It can be difficult to maintain the discipline you had as a young athlete without a coach or your parents helping you along the way.
We have both found difficulties in maintaining our previous healthy lifestyles through college and post-college life. For a while we would fluctuate between going hardcore in the gym and not going to the gym at all. We would fluctuate between having a strict diet coupled with cooking every meal and going out to eat multiple times a week. What we did not realize, is these inconsistencies piled up. When we started letting ourselves get lazy in one area of our lives, laziness began to spread to other areas. One time we literally bought more clothes instead of doing laundry. That’s how far laziness can go. On the flipside however, productivity can pile up as well. That is something we’ve been focusing a lot on recently, because, just like laziness, productivity in one area can spread to other areas if you are willing to put in the effort.
Now, where things get tricky, is holding yourself accountable. It is super easy to get started and feel like you’re on top of everything. But, laziness will always be knocking on your door. So, the difficult part becomes maintaining productivity. Because, unlike laziness, productivity needs constant effort. Through trial and error, we have found ourselves two ways in which we are able to keep ourselves accountable and continue putting in that constant effort. First, we challenge each other. We are both transparent with our goals and are able to constantly encourage each other to reach them. Second, we decided to become online health and fitness coaches. Through coaching, we have added extra responsibility and accountability for ourselves. By making our efforts public, it keeps us accountable because we want to lead by example and put in that constant effort.
In figuring out how to constantly challenge ourselves, put in the daily effort, and keep ourselves accountable, we realized that we have the ability to do the same for others. As coaches, we strive to not only develop these skills for us and help you develop them as well, we want to be able to learn with you. We believe in the process and we want to share that process with you. Through following a nutrition and workout program we were able to lose a few inches, a few pounds and gain some great muscle definition. And while we stuck to the program for the majority of the time, we most certainly did not follow it to a tee (there were a few trips to In-N-Out involved).
That is really what the 80/20 lifestyle is all about. As long as you are on top of your nutrition and excercise 80% of the time, you can enjoy that other 20% as you please. That 20% allows you the freedom to look at cheat days as treat days, and most importantly it helps you to not feel guilty. You don’t have to feel guilty that you had one donut, just stick to your nutrition plan the rest of the day. You don’t have to work out when you’re injured or if you’re on vacation, just commit to your regime the rest of the time. We want to show people that it is okay to fall off of the wagon sometimes. We fall off too. But what is possibly more important than the amount of times we don’t fall off track, is the times that we are able to push ourselves to get back on. You might have heard the mantra “progress not perfection” thrown around out there and we believe in that wholeheartedly. You are never going to lose 10 pounds overnight or have a six pack just by fasting for one day. But, if you do those things today you are one step closer than you were yesterday. If you do these things consistently they can compound over time to help you reach your goals.
Changing your relationship with food and exercise takes commitment and every day we make the conscious choice to stick to our 80/20 regime. Because, at the end of the day, the best routine is the one you stick with.
